Why are the buttocks a good place to administrate subcutaneous insulin?

January 29th, 2009 by admin

I’ve read administering subcutaneous insulin must be done in places known for their adipose tissue, such as: forearms, lower back toward the sides, internal and external part of the thighs, abdomen, and the buttocks, which I’m told to be the best way to inject insulin. What metabolic advantage do buttocks have in comparison with other adipose areas?

Adipose tissue is just a fancy way of saying fat that lies underneath the skin. The buttocks actually are the site of last choice for injection, as they are the area of slowest absorption. First choice is the abdomen, about 2 inches from the belly button. Next choice is the thigh, the outer portion at least 4 inches from the knee and 4 inches down from the crease where leg meets body. The third spot of choice is the arm, the region between the shoulder and elbow, on the outside. This is a bit tough to do one handed, and you have to be careful you are indeed doing a subcutaneous delivery. Final spot is the buttocks, the upper outer portion. The thing is you want fatty tissue, but you want to consider what sort of physical activity that part is going to get shortly after the injection as well. Muscle use will increase the absorption rate in most cases- although having a lot of adipose tissue, like in the buttocks, can also slow it down some. So if your sugar is high, you would likely want to do an abdominal injection rather than a buttocks one. But if you planned to go play tennis, you would not want to inject your racket arm. You also would want to avoid the legs if you planned to go for a jog or long walk. Also, if you needed to take your insulin but wanted a slower aborption rate, the buttocks would be your choice spot- providing your glucose level didn’t need to come down and you weren’t planning to eat very soon. You pretty much learn your own rates of absorption over time, and can choose your site better according to need and site rotation requirements.

What are the implications for a diabetic taking a normal protein shake?

January 27th, 2009 by admin

I am diabetic Type 1. I want to put on muscle, i go to the gym and am not in bad shape, but i know shakes help. Iv been to worried to take any as i don't know how it will effect my levels.
any advice?

No problems. Check the carb content and do a post prandial blood sugar level so that you know how it affects you. Then discuss it with your diabetes educator. You must look after your kidneys too so lots of water if you're increasing your protein intake.

does anyone have diabetic recipes for cupcakes and frostings?

January 26th, 2009 by admin

I just got my pancake puff pan, and want to make little cupcake balls with frosting in them. My step dad is diabetic, so I need recipes. I know I could get these online, but I am looking for preferences and recommendations.
Sorry, but I cant decide on a best answer, so I will just have to let you decide.

You can substitute Splenda for equal amounts of sugar in any recipe. Look for Splenda for baking in the baking aisle. They even have a brown sugar version.

What kinds of food is a diabetic supposed to eat?

January 24th, 2009 by admin

I have a relative that is a diabetic, she wants to know what kinds of foods she should eat? Thanks
She knows that sugar free foods are ok. She has been watching and reading labels and said that there are so many foods that raise her blood sugar, that she just doesn't know what to eat.
She was just diagnosed with type 2. Is there maybe a good web site that can help her?

limit carbohydrates- things like potatoes, pastas, breads, and corn are high in carbohydrates and send your sugar levels up.Try to stay away from sweets, eat more vegetables and salads and raw fruits. Portion control helps too.

How does the thyroid gland effect diabetes?

January 22nd, 2009 by admin

I know that if the thyroid gland isn't functioning properly, people with diabetes find it difficult to manage their diabetes. Why is that?

People with diabetes who develop hypothyroidism may find it hard to manage their diabetes. This is because the way their body uses glucose is altered.

Fatigue may set in and you won't feel like undertaking any physical activity. This may lead to weight gain from the decreased physical activity and a slower metabolism.

However, once a person with hypothyroidism receives thyroid replacement medication, their thyroid levels usually return to normal, as does their diabetes medication requirements.

How can we find local diabetes or cancer foundations to donate to?

January 21st, 2009 by admin

We would like to donate money in someone's name, to a cancer foundation or diabetes foundation or something along those lines. Unfortunately, everyone wants to go online these days and we do not want to donate to a foundation over the internet, we would like to do it in person and have a proof of donation (I know that there are printable ones if you donate online, but that requires giving someone your credit card number). So is there any way to locate local places to donate? We live in West/Southwest Michigan.

Can I suggest a non profit Childrens Hospital in your area. The one in my state is really great in working with children with Diabetes. Also check with Cancer Treatments of America also. They have several accross the country.

Is a blood sugar of 76 low after drinking a full can of Vanilla coke?

January 19th, 2009 by admin

I just drank a full can of vanilla coke so I wondered what my blood sugar would be. I tested and it was 76…I thought it would be higher than that. I am not diabetic so does this mean that my body works perfectly?
I checked it once I had finished about 2/3 of the can.

yes after you have eaten or drank something it should be higher than 80 lower than that is too low. You need to see your doctor if your concerned with low blood sugar, this is very important to your body to maintain a semi to perfect level of blood sugar.

How fat can a cat be before being diabetic?

January 17th, 2009 by admin

My orange and white stripped tabby cat (Toby) weighs 17 lbs. He is most certainly overweight At what weight would he have to be to be diabetic? I am really curious. We feed him diet food, and he does nothing but sleep and eat all day. He cannot help it.

Your overweight cat is "at risk" for DEVELOPING diabetes, but being fat is not a "sign" of the disease.

If your cat starts to lose weight, still eats regularly, is drinking a LOT of water, and his breath starts to smell like "acetone" ( nail polish remover )……THEN get him a "fructosamine" test ( blood sugar ). This will tell you IF he has diabetes, and then the correct treatment can begin.

Meantime, see if you can CUT BACK on his food INTAKE. By eating less and getting MORE EXERCISE, he may be able to get healthier and NOT develop diabetes.

***Take the amount of food that your vet says he SHOULD have PER DAY, and divide that into 3 portions. Give him 1/2 of his daily ration in the morning…….1/4 around 3 pm……and the last 1/4 around 7 pm. That way, he'll have SOME food a couple of times a day, and food in his tummy at night. By doing this AND PLAYING WITH HIM, you may be able to get his weight "under control" and keep him healthy……..

Hope this helps…..Good luck.
