How much should your blood sugar levels fall by when doing exercise?

February 25th, 2010 by admin

Hi, during sport i often faint or get very lightheaded, my doctor thinks it may be due to a sudden drop in blood sugar levels. The other day my blood sugar levels dropped from 7.3 mmol/L to 4.4 mmol/L within 20 minutes of exercise. Is this bad or normal? How much should your blood sugar levels fall by when doing exercise?
Thanks in advance.

It is not guaranteed that glucose levels will fall during exercise. some people’s glucose will fall and some people’s will rise.

faintness and lightheadedness can also be caused by blood pressures changing.

    This is an almost impossible question to answer as it depends on to many variables including but not limited to;
    Type of exercise.
    Food eaten before the exercise
    Person involved
    Metabolic rate
Sorry I doubt if anyone here can answer it for you,

Sugar levels falling can be influenced by –
    previous meals
    heat
    type of exercise
    medication (if any)
    type of day
    starting sugar levels

Try eating something like a banana, or crackers before exercising, and top up your levels wth lucozade during if you need.

Do you have diabetes? Assuming you don’t – your blood sugar should still drop during exercise – don’t worry this is normal! 4.4 is ok – for someone without diabetes, your blood sugar can fall to 3.5 without you being ill – if it’s making you feel a bit faint you should have something to eat (eg a bananna) before you exercise or take a sugary drink into the gym with you.
