How to test blood sugar without a meter at home?
Does anyone know how you can test your blood sugar at home without going to the doctors or having a meter? Or if anyone knows what your urine would look/smell like if you had diabetes? I was just wondering if i had diabetes and i didn't want to ask my parents to go to the doctors because they'd probably just laugh at me, and i've looked up the symptoms on the internet and i have had a few of them :S Help please?
It is not possible. you MUST have a meter.
Urine test are "old school". with all the new tests, a urine test tells you almost nothing. AND, if the urine test comes back positive, then you the diabetes is WAY ADVANCED, and you need some serious, immediate, and expensive medical care!
If you have high blood sugar, your urine will not look or smell differently, but it WILL taste sweet (and no, you do NOT want to know how I know….)
Most people are WRONG when they try to diagnosis diabetes from symptoms. the symptoms of diabetes are shared by MANY other disease — including puberty. For example:
–>Diabetes causes tingling in the toes, feet, lower legs, fingers, hands, and/or arms. but so does a slipped disk, or even a cheerleading injury.
–>Diabetes causes the patient to be thirsty a lot. but so does the weather! And if you drink a lot you WILL pee a lot, another symptom of diabetes.
–>Diabetes causes vision problems. but so do cataracts, separated retinas, and "floaters".
The ONLY way to diagnose diabetes is with a blood test FROM THE DOCTOR.
All it needs is one simple, CHEAP test called the A1C test. You may need to ASK the doctor to peform this test, but you only need a blood sample (some doctors have a special machine that can do it with ONE DROP of blood). Most clinics can do this test, too.
The A1C test will tell you if you are or are not diabetic.
if I were you, I would feel MUCH more comfortable having somebody laugh in my face when the test comes back negative, than to have the laughing at my funeral because the test was positive BUT I DIDN'T GET TESTED.
GET THE BLOOD TEST FROM THE DOCTOR!!!!

Your urine would not look or smell any differently. You can buy glucose urine test strips at the pharmacy without a prescription. Just pee on the strip and see if it changes colors. The bottle will have directions. It will not show any glucose unless your blood sugar is over 250, but that's just fine because if you had undiagnosed diabetes your blood sugar would be that high. The strips are not as accurate as a meter, but it's what was used before home glucose meters were available.

There's really no way to test your blood sugar without doing any of the mentioned. You can't really tell if you have diabetes by how your urine looks, but you can tell you have it by how often you go, sometimes as much as every hour. Other signs include fatigue, constant thirst, fluctuating weight gain/loss, and slow-healing injuries. If you are concerned, you should make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. Diabetes is better when you catch it early.

Well, I'm not too sure about you, but when I get "low" I always feel funny… I get shaky and feel tired… Or sometimes I get really hyper. It all depends.
Sometimes at pharmacies they have free lectures on diabetes and they have free testing.

go to the doc there is no way to test your blood sugar at home my meters battery died and i tryed to find home ways before and couldn't so just go to the doc if you don't want your parents to know why make up a different reason for going and then go in the room on your own.

I'm afraid there's no reliable way to test your blood sugar at home without a meter. Diabetes is a serious condition and if you suspect that you have it (or may be borderline), it would be best for you to tell your parents about your fears so that they can have you tested. Yes, they may laugh at you, but if they see that you are serious about this and tell them about the specific symptoms that you have experienced, I think that they will take you more seriously. Remember, it's best to have it diagnosed as soon as possible as you may still be borderline (which can still be reversed).
In the meantime, I suggest that you get more exercise and also read about possible changes in your diet in relation to the Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load of food. Besides, even if you actually don't have diabetes, more exercise and diet changes will certainly do your body good!

Here are the big 3 symptoms of undiagnosed diabetes – if you have all of them, then print this out for your parents and have them take you to a doctor for a blood test:
1. Frequent, unquenchable thirst
2. Frequent urination – urine is fairly clear and "shimmery"
3. Extreme fatigue and sleepiness
You need a meter to get a good idea of what your blood glucose is – you can buy an inexpensive one like the One Touch Mini at the drug store for about $17.

You don't say if you are in UK or not – if you are you can go to LLoyds chemist and they will do a finger prick test for you there and then, (and its free) possibly other chemists do as well.
If you're in USA try at your pharmacist – they may also offer this service but I am honestly not sure if they do.
