How can I tell if my hamster has diabetes?
I have a male dwarf hamster. He is active he eats and drinks fine. I don’t think he has diabetes I just want to know for future reference.
I don’t think Hamster’s can get diabetes but the vet would give you the best answer!

Drinking and urinating a lot more than seems normal will be the first sign. If he’s drinking a lot often and urinating within 20 minutes that’s when it’s time to head to a vet, however if the weather has suddenly gotten hotter it could be that, but better safe than sorry.

Dwarf hamsters can get diabetes, and it is more common than you think. Your hamster doesn’t sound like it has diabetes, because it is eating and drinking normal amounts. If he was diabetic, he would be drinking tons of water, and peeing every 20 minutes. There may also be weight loss, and cataracts. There is a simple test that you can buy at any drugstore which is the Bayer Keto-Diastix. They are test strips where you collect a urine sample and if the results turn out to be a high sugar level, then it is diabetes. This test does work on hamsters. Your hamster sounds fine though. I don’t think you have anything to worry about:)

Hello,
Although it can affect all kinds of hamsters, Campbell Dwarf hamsters are the main kind which have diabetes. Which occurs around seven to nine months of age. The trigger is a dirty cage, stress or an unhealthy diet. Severe cases can result in There’s. There’s no cure for this. The symptoms are excessive drinking, urinating, shaking, trembling, and a low temperature. I hope your dwarf hamster does not get this! As it’s fatal,
Emily.
