    My son Tyler was …
My son Tyler was diagnosed at 10 months old. He is 6 now. He has been awesome with it. Somewhere in his twos he was waking up in the middle of the night and telling us he was low. He is very in tune with his body. He is not ready for a pump yet. I am totally confident that in the next five to ten years they will have cured this disease. With the recent discoveries that have made new cells grow and function without the need for stem cells, it will just be a matter of time.

    That depends on how …
That depends on how old/mature you are. :o ) To a parent who loves you very much, it’s important that you take care of yourself!

Life with Diabetes is just like regular life–sometimes a little messy, with ups and downs. As long as the numbers are in good shape, and the A1c numbers are good, we are happy to try and give him as much control as we can. When it comes down to it, it’s his to control, not ours. He will have to take total control at some point, and we must prepare him for that.

    that sounds pretty …
that sounds pretty easy but my mom’s a type of perfectionest who wants to do EVERYTHING. if there’s a t i n y jump in my blood sugars…total drama. i’ve tried to take over everything but one mistake and she loses my trust. any tips on helping me be more independent in my diabetic control?

    Lots of thanks,
    Amy

    It certainly takes …
It certainly takes some time to get used to it.

We’re much more structured now. Having some peers to talk to helps.

We also split the jobs up as much as possible. Dad (me) does the set changes, night blood sugar checks and school issues, Mom packs the school lunches, checks his diabetes supplies regularly (every set change) and orders new supplies. It works for us…

We also made a deal with him: you tell us EVERY number, and we promise not to freak out at the “bad” ones. :o ) No Drama.

    Good job! Im …
Good job! Im surprised that you could deal with it so easily at that age cus i was diagnosed a year ago and, even though i’ve got used to the routines, i still havent been able to cope with my mom since then. So i just wanna ask the parents: How did you guys deal with it? I mean with the highs lows, ketones, you know. I think my mom really needs some advice cus she’s going crazy right now.

    Cheers,
    Amy

    Keep up the good …
Keep up the good fight! Your eyes, kidneys, feet and loved ones will thank you.

Now that Calvin is a teenager, I have adopted a difference parental tack, one I kipped from the ADA: “most people don’t die from diabetes, they die from poorly managed diabetes.”

It always helps to have some “type 3s” around (people who give you diabetes support and encouragement).

Nice work kid. I just got diagnosed with type 1 in December and just recently I’ve really figured out how to live and enjoy life with it. Definitely a day to day hour by hour thing to deal with. Fighting that feeling to stuff your face is something else. Good Luck

    This is the first …
This is the first video where I’ve seen what it’s like with the daily struggle to live with diabetes. As a mom, I tell my type 1 daughter she can do anything. But there are times where it kills me to tell her, her blood sugar is too low or too high to swim, eat, or run. It just doesn’t make sense.

    what i wouldnt give …
what i wouldnt give to go one day without having to deal with this on an hourly basis. im 16 and ive had type 1 all my life. so if you have something negative to say about how people control diabetes, think twice about what its like putting sugar in your coffee with having to worry about it

  17. momoftype1

    I agree with you …
I agree with you that HFCS is terrible and I try not to give it to my 4 year old diabetic but it is important to let these kids be kids as well. Their whole lives change when they are diagnosed. My daughter a sugary cereal for breakfast a couple of times a month, if that, but on those days she asks…if I count the carbs correctly and give her the appropriate amount of insulin then it doesn’t mess with her BG too much. Trust me, we live with this disease every day.

    Um, hello! sugar is …
Um, hello! sugar is pure unopposed carbs. And it’s not about carbs really… As I said, type 1 is an autoimmune disease and inflammatory foods directly assist the inflammatory cascades that lead to further beta call destruction. He’s be better off with pure glucose than HFCS or wheat/gluten products to raise his blood glucose levels. But these are ideas that the FDA, Kelloggs and Coca-Cola would rather you not know. glucose.

  19. momoftype1

    Don’t be so quick …
Don’t be so quick to judge. It is a common misconception that diabetics can’t have sugar. It is about carbs, not sugar and although it’s not the best choice in food, it is fine as long as he gets insulin.

  20. travisthurston

    If my kid had DM1 ( …
If my kid had DM1 (which is an autoimmune disease) he wouldn’t be eating cereal, milk and gatorade. Gluten, casein and high fructose corn syrup?! all inflammatory foods with little nutritional value. If you fighting a “war” (which I think is a very poor analogy), I wouldn’t be using those “weapons”.

  21. paolox3

    As a Type-2 …
As a Type-2 adult-onset DM’er, it was explained to me that diet and exercise, along with oral medication, can control Type-2 to a certain extent. Kids like Calvin that come down with Type-1 MUST have insulin. There’s plenty of info out there to be found, but please be aware that no diet-only is going to control Type-1. There are carbs and natural sugars is ‘almost’ every food, and that’s what drives blood glucose levels up. A lot the comments have said a lot, though, so I won’t go on with that!

    Diabetes sucks! …
Diabetes sucks! Let’s Kill it! Give $ to JDF. I am sick of living with it after 35 years. I have been told it will be cured but when? It needs to happen. If we can produce so many new gizmos why ot fix this. Diabetes is difficult and this kid shows it. Forget profits for the pharmecuicals – lets kill this disease and suffering NOW!

    The Dr. Faustman …
The Dr. Faustman seems more legitimate, however.

They have cured Type 1 in mice, and have been able to do it for some time now.

There are many new treatments and potential cures for Type 1 right on the horizon.

My hope is that Calvin will soon be able to either contribute in a meaningful way to that research, or he will benefit from a developed treatment to cure his Type 1.

Hey, a dad can hope, right? :o )
