What causes fat gain, insulin or calories- Mark Sisson says insulin and is adamant?
Mark Sisson says insulin is a major factor in fat gain and that it is NOT all about the calories.
Who is right?
Is it insulin or calories that get you fatter?
Calories… It’s obvious.
If people are saying different, they’re just trying to sell something and come up with a gimmick.

The food that you eat contains energy molecules called "calories". When ingested, they turn into insulin that get absorbed by the body.

Mark Sisson is perhaps talking about some particular medical condition.
When we say calorie we presume that we are talking about a healthy body of which all the internal organs are functioning.

What makes you "fatter" is if you eat more calories than you burn. Calories intake is a factor that we can control.
Insulin is a hormone that most of us produce. It is a factor in our metabolism. We don’t have direct control on the levels of insulin in our blood stream.
Ultimately, if you don’t eat anything (no calories) you will not get fatter.

Insulin tells our bodies to store calories as fat.
If the insulin levels are spiked by eating to many simple carbs (sugars) then the body stores a percentage of those calories as fat, whether you are consuming fewer new calories than you are expending or not.
While being slightly overweight can be remedied with simple calorie counting alone, once the body reaches a certain threshold the metabolism gets thrown completely out of sync and then the simple ratio of calories in: calories spent doesn’t cut it anymore, since your body stores a certain about of calories as fat no matter how little you eat And in fact the less you eat, the MORE of those calories are hoarded by your body as fat while less of them are being used to keep your body going–it’s actually possible to be malnourished while GAINING weight.
There are also some foods (like trans fats) that are artificial, and never meant to be used by the body–the only way for the body to digest them is to store them as fat cells and then metabolize them into blood sugar–but metabolizing fat into energy is far harder for the body to do than to use calories directly from food (especially since that "direct food energy" always gets used first.)
The combination of simple carbs and short-chain fatty acids wreaks havoc on your metabolism and your waistline–but almost all processed foods contain one or the other, if not both.
