Diabetes affects 10% of the population in Canada. Up to 70% of diabetics will develop peripheral neuropathy (a loss of sensation in their feet). One in 4 of these patients will develop a foot ulcer, for whom amputation is a major risk. Diabetic foot complications are a leading cause of hospitalization, and accounts for is over 75% of the non-traumatic lower limb amputations performed annually in Canada.
